Experience Puccini's wonderful opera "La Rondine" in Fairfax County! [07 Jun 2010|01:42pm]
riverbendopera
[ mood | creative ]

Fairfax County has just one resident opera company -- Riverbend Opera, iROC, now in its second year.

Later in June, iROC will  be presenting Puccini's masterpiece  La Rondine in concert, with English surtitles.

If you know Puccini from more familiar works like la Boheme or Madame Butterfly, you may be amazed that La Rondine is not as well know.  Soaring melodies, lush lines that linger in your memory -- presented by a cast of professional singers from the Washington metro area.

Two performances in Fairfax County --

June 20, 3:00 pm, McLean Community Center -- 1234 Ingleside Ave, McLean

and

June 27, 7:00pm, Providence Presbyterian Church -- 9190 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax

plus another in Washington, DC, on June 22, at 7:30pm (600 Maine Ave, SW)

There is lots more information on the iROC website

FREE to good home... [23 Mar 2010|10:25am]

cptjohnc
I have a fully functional 26 or 27 inch Sanyo TV (CRT, not HD)that needs a home... anyone need a TV for a guest room or such?

I don't have a model number, though I could probably get it, but I can say it is NOT a high end unit -- no Component Video or S-video.

Located in Fairfax, but I work in Arlington (Crystal City) and head to McLean pretty regularly, so I'm sure we can work out a mutually convenient exchange...

I think I have it taken. Thanks.

Alright, I need to find a bus (or busses) to get me from the Fairfax County Government Centre to 13954 MetroTech Dr, out off Rt 50 in Chantilly. I think I found two busses that will get me there, but I'm not certain, the maps and schedules make no sense and I don't know if they overlap or anything. I've gone to hopstop and the wmta site and both say there's no routes that will take me there, but going to the Fairfax Connector site tells me of two busses.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

$1260 a month apt. sublease $500 cash incentive. 2bd/2ba [02 Oct 2009|09:21pm]

annamarie326

Hello, my fiancee and I are purchasing our first home and are looking for someone to take over our lease. we have a 2bdrm 2 full bath apartment that is on the top floor, is one of the updated apartments in the community, and has a fireplace and balcony.

rent is 1260 a month which includes 5 day a week valet trash pickup.

the apartment is a roomate style one where the family room is in between the two bedrooms, and also has a VERY large laundry / mudroom.

We really like the apartment community and like the layout of the apt. very much but we're growing out of it and with starting a family soon we couldn't help but take advantage of the new homebuyer credit to buy a home :)

pictures / tour etc avail upon request

$500 cash incentive for taking over our lease!!

our closing date is set for oct.20th so we can move out anytime between end of oct and end of nov. for you to take over.  Our lease ends Sept.2010 so you'd either need to provide 60 days notice and a penalty fee to move out or find someone to sublease for the rest of the time.

updated energy saving programmable thermostat, decorative curtain rod, and decorative sliders from ikea that make the bdrm that doesnt have the attached bath essentially a master as well since they cove up the entryway between the two when closed and look like decorative wall hangs when open

Closing out the Summer Season... [19 Aug 2009|03:46am]

It seems that the scene has witnessed a true resurgence as of late…

Indeed, this new found revival appears to carry a very real sense of possibility & a feeling of anticipation for what the future may hold. Like the phoenix rising from a period that was caught in relative obscurity, there seems to be a new level of stature that's beginning to quench the thirst of many & usher in a new era.

Dunking Booths [29 Jun 2009|12:09pm]

Hi All,
I am having a Breast Cancer Picnic at the end of August, all proceeds going towards my 3 day walking in Washington DC, in October.  I was hoping at this picnic that I would have a dunking booth.  Would anyone know of anyone who would have a dunking booth that would loan it to me for a minimal cost since this is for charity?  I only need it for a few hours, and I am located in Alexandria, VA.

If you could help me or steer me in the right direction, that would be great!

Thank you so much!

New favorite restaurant [27 Jun 2009|07:41pm]

also_huey
I'm kind of upset that I've managed to live here for eight years before learning about Vinnie's in Fairfax. This is rapidly becoming my favorite restaurant. Having been single and living alone for a year or so, I've eaten at restaurants quite a lot -- I eat dinner just about every night at the Little Italy in Annandale frexample, mostly because it's close to my house -- but for my money, Vinnie's is about the best thing going on.

If you want a decent steak in a place to hang out with a bunch of friends, or to see and be seen, you could go to Sweetwater or Silverado or Mike's. If you don't give a shit about atmosphere or where all the cool people are, and you just want to eat some excellent food, you've got to try Vinnie's. So far, I'm high on the steak au poivre and the lobster vincenza, but I suspect I'll be working my way through the rest of the menu over the next couple months.

Free Stuff [09 Jun 2009|12:52am]

cptjohnc
I know this is not the best use of this community, but I feel compelled to try this, as I've already done craig's list and freecycle for some of these, and got no takers. Besides, I've gotten some good free stuff from folks here... so maybe I can return the favor? The stuff is located in Fairfax (very near Vienna Metro), but I might be able to get it close to you during my travels if we can work out something mutually convenient.

First of all: I have a 19 inch 'gateway' CRT monitor... in case that doesn't resonate, this is a huge old thing -- think 2ft by 2ft by 2ft -- but it is in great shape, and has a pretty decent picture -- hardly used. We had it hooked to our 4th computer before the 2d computer died and now we have no use (nor space) for it. Anyone want it?

second: A very tired love seat. It isn't uncomfortable, but it isn't pretty, either. It wasn't very attractive to begin with, and it is old, has some stains, and a few tears. The back bolster foam is pretty tired, and, well, it just isn't pretty. However, I suspect it was a great piece of furniture in its day (it appears to be 'bauhaus' brand (I know bauhaus as a design movement... not a brand?), and I believe I found a 'made in W. Germany label in it somewhere... that gives you some idea of age). I suspect that if you are a re-upholstery hobbyist, you could have a really nice piece, as the frame seems very solid, and the whole thing seems well built. I am including a few small pictures. The tears in the side (pictured) mostly do not show with the cushions in place.

If it is an added inducement, we also have a matching sleep sofa -- which is actually in somewhat worse shape than the loveseat. :/ Further, I have a van, and I will consider delivery within a reasonable distance (defined for this purpose as closer than the nearest charity donation center that still takes furniture), as long as someone can help with the unloading and movement into the new location.

third: I have a very old JVC VHS-C video camcorder. This unit is so old that the camera is actually a separate device from the 'VCR', though they share a frame. The camera itself seems to be in working order -- at least, it shows images through the viewfinder when it is powered up -- but the VCR unit is not working. Specifically, the tape door does not open. It could be that the unit works fine if you can get the door opened, but I have no way of knowing, and don't want to tear into it and make things worse. It powers up, and 'runs' but then powers down, presumably because it detects the absence of a tape. I suspect that its best use is as a prop as it looks very much like a professional grade camera, but it would appear that the camera could be used with some other recording device, or if you are handy, perhaps the VCR could be repaired.

Lastly, I have a Kitchenaid blender with a burned out motor (I think the motor is burned out -- it doesn't work... could be a fuse or thermal switch). I believe we have all of the parts, including the glass jar, blades, top, etc... It was just out of warranty when it died. I doubt it is economical to fix, but if you are handier than I am, it is yours. Or if you need the parts.

Anyway, respond here if you have interest, or shoot me an e-mail at cptjohnc at gmail dot com.

Oh -- I am cross posting this to some other local communities, so I'm sorry if you see this more than once.

Computer Repairs from "The Computer Place"? [11 May 2009|10:27pm]

agentelrond
Hi everyone. I'm wondering if anyone has ever taken a malfunctioning (or non-functioning, which I suppose would be rather "mal") computer to a shop/repair store called The Computer Place, on James Swart Circle in Fairfax? http://www.tcponline.com/Index.htm

If so, what were your experiences?

If not, are there any other local (around the GMU Fairfax campus area) computer repair shops that you would recommend (or alternately, suggest avoiding at all cost)?

Thanks!

You might want to look at what the county supervisors are planning to do to your property taxes next fiscal year:

http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/government/budget/fy2010/proposed-tax-rates-and-fees.htm

I can't speak for anyone else, but my assessment did NOT fall by 14% this year, and it went up last year, so my tax bill will continue to rise, despite falling property values (and personal financial crisis caused by layoff.) Thanks BOCS. You're pals.

Ollie was just adopted by his new family yesterday afternoon and this
morning at 7:00 am something scared him on his walk and he pulled away from

Ollie is about 20 pounds, short and stout, black with some tan and is
wearing a Harley Davidson Collar, a red harness and dragging a red leash.
Ollie is VERY afraid of people, but may approach another dog.

Ollie has his Furry Suits Rescue tag on - it is a silver bone and the number
to call is (571) 235-0222.

If you have any info or if you have seen him please call the number above.
He is only 7 months old, very afraid and I'm sure VERY cold. He has been out
